             abstract = "The objective of this research is the analysis of the land use and 
                         occupation in areas of permanent preservation (APP) of the urban 
                         area of Itajub{\'a}- MG- Brasil, using geoprocessing. For the 
                         study, were used orthophotos, the digital terrain model ASTER to 
                         generate the level curve and ALOS satellite image, sensor AVNIR 
                         -2, of the year 2007 for the elaboration of the map of land use 
                         and occupation. The geographic information system (GIS) used was 
                         SPRING (version 5.1.5). APP were delimited along the Rio 
                         Sapuca{\'{\i}}, along the main tributaries of this river, on 
                         hilltops, around lakes and slopes greater than 45 °. According to 
                         the map of land use and occupation, it was found that over 50% of 
                         the study area is occupied by pastures, 20% for urban areas and 
                         13% native forest. The paper presents the map of conflicting land 
                         use, in which was possible to analyze that 92% of the area 
                         occupied by the APP are with inappropriate use and that only 8% 
                         are occupied by native forest. Finally, it was proposed that the 
                         main guideline to be followed is to use the city's Master Plan, 
                         which is provided for recovery of APP and not to use these for 
                         building.",
